Two men arrested in fatal shooting of 12-year-old girl
CHICAGO (AP) — Two men have been arrested and charged with murder in the fatal March shooting of a girl who was struck in the head by a stray bullet after celebrating her 12th birthday, Chicago police said Tuesday.[1]
Malik Parish, 22, and Abdul Ali, 20, were arrested on Sunday, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said. He said Parish has 11 prior arrests.
Parish was also charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and Ali was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, Brown said.
Nyzireya Moore died March 4, three days after she was shot in the West Englewood neighborhood. She was in the passenger seat of a family member’s car when three men fired on another vehicle and a bullet struck her in the back of the head, police said.
A third suspect remains at large, Brown said.
Information from an anonymous witness led to the arrests, Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said.
One of the suspects has confessed, Deenihan said, but he did not say which one.
It wasn't clear whether Parish or Ali have attorneys who could comment on their behalf. Both men were expected in bond court Tuesday.
Community activist Andrew Holmes has said the girl was out celebrating her 12th birthday with her family when she was shot.
