DeStefano Partners has won a design award for a master plan the firm drew up for the Harold Ickes Homes, a Near South Side public housing development that was mostly demolished in 2009.

Silver screens in the South Loop
The South Loop has a full-service movie theater once again. Last week, Kerasotes opened the ShowPlace Icon inside of the Roosevelt Collection residential development, at 150 W. Roosevelt. On opening night, Jordan Stapleton took in a little Hollywood magic with friends.

How money collected by a special taxing district on the edge of the South Loop will be spent has proved to be a moving target this fall and winter. The Calumet-Cermak Tax Increment Financing district was created in 1998.

Homeland Security will stay proceedings for one year

Rigoberto Padilla, a junior at the University of Illinois-Chicago and an undocumented immigrant, will be allowed to stay in Chicago for one more year. Padilla was set to be deported to Mexico on Dec. 16, but the Department of Homeland Security deferred his deportation.

Gateway Harbor marina construction expected to start in March

A new marina will be built at Gateway Harbor, between Navy Pier and the Chicago River's outlet to Lake Michigan. The Chicago Park District will oversee the construction of a 2,610-foot-long pier atop an existing pier, providing 240 new slips for permanent and transient boaters and 15,500 square feet of restaurant and retail space.
